Going for Gold: Understanding Your Precious Metal Quote

One of the questions we’re asked most often is: “How much will it cost to make my ring in solid gold or platinum?” And while we’d love to give a quick answer, it’s not that simple—because each quote is bespoke and based on your individual design.

Gold and platinum are timeless choices when it comes to jewellery—but they’re also luxury materials, and with that comes a higher price tag. Here’s how we calculate your bespoke quote and why you’ll see a difference compared to silver or 18ct gold vermeil plating.

Firstly, Why Choose Solid Gold or Platinum?

Opting for solid gold or platinum is about more than just aesthetics—it’s a choice rooted in durability, value, and sentiment. These precious metals are designed to stand the test of time, making them ideal for pieces that carry deep personal meaning, like wedding bands or heirloom designs. Solid gold available yellow, rose or white resists tarnishing and platinum is incredibly strong and hypoallergenic, all are perfect for everyday wear. While they’re a more significant investment, these metals offer a luxurious finish and lasting quality that elevate your jewellery from special to timeless.

How We Work It Out

When you request a quote for 9ct, 14ct or 18ct solid gold (or platinum), we start by weighing your carved wax ring once it’s returned to us. This gives us the exact weight of your design, which we then use to calculate the amount of metal required.

That weight of the wax is multiplied by the current market price per gram of your chosen metal. Gold and platinum prices fluctuate daily, so your quote reflects the real-time value at the point of casting.

We then add the cost of casting, finishing, and polishing to give you a final price. Because each piece is totally unique, we can’t quote in advance without your wax.

Why Is Gold So Much More?

Gold and platinum are rare, high-value metals. They cost significantly more to source, and they also require specialist handling. On top of this, the price per gram increases with purity—so 18ct gold is more expensive than 9ct, for example. Platinum, being denser and more challenging to work with, also comes at a premium.

So, What Can I Expect to Pay?

Every ring is different- which is why your quote is unique to you- but here are some ballpark figures based on the ring designs and sizes above*:

1. Skinny Flat Top Ring. Size M. 0.25g (Weight of the wax)
9ct gold- £850
14ct gold- £1,170
18ct gold- £1,850
Platinum- £1,290

2. 5mm Band. Size Q 0.55g (Weight of the wax)
9ct gold- £1300
14ct gold- £1,850
18ct gold- £2,365
Platinum- £1,635

3. Wide 8mm Band. Size T. 0.80g (Weight of the wax)
9ct gold- £1,700
14ct gold- £2,350
18ct gold- £3,3235
Platinum – £2,172

Thicker or chunkier rings will naturally use more metal—and cost more.

* These prices are calculated on metal costs at the time of publishing. The price of gold fluctuates daily which is why it’s so difficult to provide a “rough” quote without your ring/ pendant.

How the Wedding Band Kit is Different

To simplify things for soon-to-be newlyweds, we’ve built two upfront instalments into our Wedding Band Kit. The first payment covers your casting kit and initial setup, and the second is based on your final wax design. However, we work within clear parameters, so you’ll know what to expect and avoid any surprises.

This transparent two-step system makes budgeting for your forever rings much easier—without compromising on quality or craftsmanship.

Top Tips for Keeping Costs Down

If you’re dreaming of solid gold or platinum but want to keep the price manageable, a little extra care in the carving stage can make a big difference. Because your quote is based on the weight of your wax, reducing excess thickness and refining your design can help lower the final cost.

Use our video tutorials to check your ring’s wearability and comfort, and be mindful of how much material you’re using—shaving off a bit of wax here and there can shave off pounds from your quote. Not only does this make your ring more affordable, but it also results in a lighter, more comfortable piece you’ll want to wear every day.
