At The Workbench London, we want your ring-making experience to be as smooth and enjoyable as possible. That’s why it’s essential to start with the correct wax ring size before you begin carving. Here’s everything you need to know about sizing your wax ring to create the perfect fit for your one of a kind ring.
Start with the Right Size Wax
When you receive your ring carving kit, unless you knew your ring size and ordered your wax to size you’ll notice the wax ring comes in a standard size I. If you’ve opted for the “size it yourself” option, the very first thing you MUST do is size your wax ring to fit the finger you plan to wear it on.
Remember, if you have larger fingers, it’s important to purchase an XL wax ring to carve. Getting the right size from the start will save you time and ensure your ring fits perfectly when it’s finished.
Sizing Your Wax Ring: The Essential First Step on Your Ring Carving Journey!
Sizing your wax ring is simple and fun! Grab the rectangular sandpaper included in your kit, roll it up into a tight roll, and start sanding around the centre of the wax ring. Sand evenly until the ring fits your finger comfortably. A well-fitting ring should slide on easily but offer slight resistance when you take it off. This ensures it stays securely on your finger, even if you’re creating a pinky ring—where a slightly tighter fit is recommended to prevent slipping.
What to Do if Your Ring Size is Smaller Than the Standard Wax
If your ring size is smaller than the standard size I, don’t worry! Use the ring sizer provided in your kit to determine your correct size. Once you’ve figured that out, send your wax ring back to us, let us know the size and we’ll size it down for you.
The Importance of Getting the Right Size
Here’s the deal: resizing rings to make them larger after carving is tricky. While we can sometimes stretch rings by one or two sizes after casting, making them significantly bigger is labour-intensive and not always possible with some designs. So, starting with the correct size wax is essential to avoid any issues later on.
